Balloon mitral valvotomy improves clinical profiles and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis.
Why the study?
The clinical, maternal, and fetal outcomes of pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis undergoing percutaneous transmitral commissurotomy during pregnancy were not well characterized.

Does percutaneous transmitral commissurotomy (BMV) improve clinical, maternal, and fetal outcomes in pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis?
Balloon mitral valvotomy is a safe and clinically effective intervention for pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis, resulting in improved maternal profiles and favorable fetal outcomes.

Supports BMV consideration in pregnant severe MS; leaves open randomized confirmation of maternal-fetal benefits.
Objective To evaluate the clinical, maternal, and fetal outcomes of pregnant women undergoing percutaneous transmitral commissurotomy (PTMC) during pregnancy. Methods A single-center prospective cohort observational study. Pregnant women with severe MS who underwent PTMC were included. The patients were monitored before and after the procedure, and fetal and maternal outcomes were assessed. Results BMV significantly enhanced the clinical and echocardiographic profiles of pregnant women with severe MS. Low-birth-weight babies were noted, unrelated to BMV. Moderate commissural MR occurred but was managed conservatively. Conclusion BMV is safe and effective in pregnant women with severe MS resulting in favorable fetal outcomes.

Subburaj et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in Severe Mitral Stenosis in Pregnancy. Balloon Mitral Valvotomy (BMV) / Percutaneous Transmitral Commissurotomy (PTMC) was evaluated on Clinical, maternal, and fetal outcomes. Balloon mitral valvotomy significantly enhanced the clinical and echocardiographic profiles of pregnant women with severe mitral stenosis and resulted in favorable fetal outcomes.
