Soil degradation poses a critical challenge to food security, poverty reduction, and sustainable development in Sub-Saharan Africa. In this review, we synthesize economic perspectives on soil degradation in Sub-Saharan Africa. We draw on concepts, measures, and analysis from the biophysical sciences to define soil degradation and present evidence of its extent. We review the drivers of soil degradation and its economic consequences and indicate possible approaches toward remediation. We highlight opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration to jointly address soil health and rural welfare.
