Key result
Bay leaf decoction reduces mean systolic blood pressure by ~16 mmHg in hypertensive elderly patients.
Why the study?
Hypertension affects a large proportion of the global population, but the effect of bay leaf decoction on elderly hypertensive patients was not established.

Bay leaf decoction may serve as a potential low-cost complementary therapy for short-term blood pressure reduction in elderly hypertensive patients, though controlled studies are needed.
Bay leaf decoction was associated with SBP reduction in this small uncontrolled study; leaves open efficacy versus placebo and requires randomized confirmation.
The World Health Organization (WHO) in 2023 showed that the number of people with hypertension globally reached 33%, meaning that 1 in 3 people suffer from hypertension. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of bay leaf decoction on elderly patients with hypertension at the Noor Fatimah Nursing Home in Palembang City in 2025. This study used a pre-experimental analytical design with a single-group pre-test and post-test approach. The sample consisted of all 15 elderly patients with hypertension at the Noor Fatimah Nursing Home in Palembang in 2025. Based on the Wilcoxon test results, the p-value for systolic blood pressure was 0.000 and the p-value for diastolic blood pressure was 0.000. If the value of a (<0.05), then Ho is rejected and Ha is accepted, indicating that the average before giving bay leaf decoction was152.66/90.66 mmhg. After consuming bay leaf decoction, blood pressure became 136.66/78.00 mmhg. From the statistical test results, it can be concluded that there is an effect of administering bay leaf decoction in lowering blood pressure in hypertensive patients.

Saspira et al. (2026) studied Hypertension (n=15). Bay leaf decoction (rebusan daun salam) vs. Pre-intervention baseline (single group) was evaluated on Systolic blood pressure (Mean reduction of 16 mmHg, p=0.000). Bay leaf decoction significantly reduced mean systolic blood pressure from 152.66 mmHg to 136.66 mmHg in elderly patients with hypertension (p=0.000).
