Erythropoietin matches blood transfusion for reducing infarct size and improving cardiac function in anemic MI.
Why the study?
The comparative cardioprotective effects of erythropoietin treatment versus fresh-blood transfusion in anemic rats after acute myocardial infarction were unknown.
Should not change transfusion practice in anemic MI; leaves open erythropoietin's role as alternative in clinical trials.

Xenocostas et al. (2010) studied Acute myocardial infarction with anemia (n=76). Erythropoietin vs. Fresh-blood transfusion (to 100 g/L hemoglobin) or saline was evaluated on Infarct size and cardiac function at 24 hours. In anemic rats with acute myocardial infarction, erythropoietin treatment was equally effective as fresh-blood transfusion at significantly reducing infarct size, decreasing myocardial apoptosis, and improving cardiac function compared to saline.
