Key result
Endocardial EPO injection cuts ischaemic area ~54% vs placebo in a porcine model.
Why the study?
Does percutaneous endocardial injection of erythropoietin reduce ischaemic injury in a porcine model of chronic progressive myocardial ischaemia?

Does percutaneous endocardial injection of erythropoietin reduce ischaemic injury in a porcine model of chronic progressive myocardial ischaemia?
Absolute Event Rate: 19% vs 41%
Percutaneous endocardial injection of erythropoietin attenuates ischaemic tissue damage and reduces myocardial fibrosis in a porcine model of chronic progressive myocardial ischaemia.

Supports targeted erythropoietin delivery in ischaemic cardiomyopathy; leaves open translation from porcine models to clinical use.
Krause et al. (2006) conducted an RCT in chronic progressive myocardial ischaemia (n=13). Erythropoietin (EPO) vs. Placebo was evaluated on ischaemic surface area. Percutaneous endocardial injection of erythropoietin significantly reduced ischaemic surface area (19% vs. 41%) and myocardial fibrosis (8% vs. 28%) compared to placebo in a porcine ischaemia model.
