From guidelines to practice: A call for FIGO member societies to lead the way to end postpartum hemorrhageEvery year, tens of thousands of women die from postpartum hemorrhage (PPH).These deaths are avoidable; with existing effective tools, medicine and training, PPH can be prevented and treated.October 5, 2026 marks 1 year since the inaugural World PPH Day, when the WHO-FIGO-ICM consolidated guidelines for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of PPH 1 were released during the XXV FIGO World Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.Twelve months on, PPH remains the leading cause of maternal morbidity and mortality. We know what works. The consolidated guidelines provide a clear framework for action. If we are to meet the Sustainable Development Goals maternal mortality ratio target of fewer than 70 deaths per 100 000 live births by 2030, the guidelines must be adopted and implemented now.
