Bibliometric analysis identifies the US as leading myocarditis MRI research, producing ~26% of publications.
Why the study?
Operational protocols and clinical application guidelines for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in myocarditis diagnosis have undergone continuous updates over the past three decades, necessitating a systematic analysis of research trends.
This bibliometric analysis highlights the evolving research trends in MRI-based myocarditis diagnosis, identifying the United States and Italy as leading contributors and noting recent focus on COVID-19 vaccine-related myocarditis.

CMR myocarditis literature shows evolving protocols; leaves open which updates merit prospective validation before clinical adoption.
Myocarditis is an inflammatory disease affecting myocardial tissue, with lesions that may present as focal or diffuse distributions. Over the past three decades, the operational protocols and clinical application guidelines for cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in myocarditis diagnosis have undergone continuous updates. This study systematically retrieved relevant literature from the Web of Science Core Collection spanning 2014 to 2023. Visual network maps of countries, institutions, authors, co-cited authors, and references were constructed using VOSviewer, while CiteSpace was employed for keyword co-occurrence analysis, cluster analysis, and burst detection. A total of 394 relevant articles were included, showing a sustained growth trend in annual publications from 2014 to 2022, followed by a decline in 2023. The United States of America led with 103 articles (26.1%), while Italy dominated the institutional rankings, occupying the majority of the top five positions. Professor Karin Klingel emerged as the most influential scholar in this field, with Journal of the American College of Cardiology: Cardiovascular Imaging and the Journal of Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance serving as the most active academic platforms. Recent research highlights a correlation between coronavirus disease 2019 vaccination rates and myocarditis incidence, emphasizing the critical role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) combined with echocardiography and endomyocardial biopsy in disease evaluation. Notably, the multimodal imaging capabilities of MRI not only provide essential diagnostic evidence but also demonstrate clinical significance in prognosis assessment through quantitative parameters. In conclusion, this bibliometric analysis reveals evolving research hotspots and trends in MRI-based myocarditis diagnosis, offering theoretical foundations for optimizing clinical pathways and guiding future research directions.

Chen et al. (2025) conducted a review in Myocarditis (n=394). Bibliometric analysis of MRI-based myocarditis research was evaluated. A bibliometric analysis of 394 articles on MRI-based myocarditis diagnosis from 2014 to 2023 identified the USA as the leading contributor (26.1%) and highlighted evolving research trends.
