Transient AKT activation supports cardiac survival, while chronic activation drives inflammation and dysfunction.
Why the study?
The dual role of AKT in cardiac remodelling, with both beneficial and pathological effects, requires clarification to understand its impact on cardiac function.
Highlights the dichotomous role of AKT signaling in cardiac remodeling, where transient activation is cardioprotective but pathological activation leads to dysfunction.

Context-dependent AKT effects leave therapeutic targeting open in cardiac disease; hypothesis-generating for timed, selective interventions.
The double-edged role of AKT in cardiac remodelling. Transient AKT, canonically downstream of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K), is associated with positive cardiac outcomes such as cell survival and adaptive growth, whereas pathological activation of AKT, perhaps through non-canonical upstream mechanisms such as Wee1, results in decreased cardiac function, e.g. due to maladaptive growth and increased inflammation.

Wardman et al. (2025) conducted a review in cardiac remodelling. AKT activation was evaluated. Transient AKT activation promotes positive cardiac outcomes like cell survival, whereas its pathological activation results in decreased cardiac function through maladaptive growth and inflammation.
