Key result
Six-cardiac-autoantibody panel distinguishes Chagas cardiomyopathy stages with ~0.87 AUC.
Why the study?
Chagas cardiomyopathy affects up to 30% of chronic Chagas disease patients and lacks reliable biomarkers for severity and conduction abnormalities.
Does a panel of cardiac autoantibodies accurately distinguish disease severity stages in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy?
Observational
Does a panel of cardiac autoantibodies accurately distinguish disease severity stages in patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy?
Effect estimate: AUC 0.87 (95% CI 0.777-0.977)
A panel of six cardiac autoantibodies accurately distinguishes the stages of Chagas cardiomyopathy, offering a potential novel tool for cost-effective risk stratification and prognostication.
Should not yet change ChCM management; supports hypothesis-generating research into autoantibody staging.
Chagas cardiomyopathy (ChCM) affects up to 30% of patients with chronic Chagas disease and lacks reliable biomarkers for severity and conduction abnormalities. We profiled cardiac autoantibodies using 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis and mass spectrometry, followed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay validation and machine learning analysis. Six autoantibodies linked to glycolysis, adenosine triphosphate metabolism, and sarcomere structure distinguished ChCM stages (area under the curve: 0.87; 95% CI: 0.777-0.977) and a mean classification accuracy (0.84; 95% CI: 0.705-0.935). These findings suggest that an antibody-based panel may enable cost-effective risk stratification and prognostication in ChCM, with prospective validation before clinical application.

Ribeiro et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Chagas cardiomyopathy. Cardiac autoantibody biomarkers was evaluated on Distinguishing Chagas cardiomyopathy stages (AUC 0.87, 95% CI 0.777-0.977). A panel of six cardiac autoantibodies distinguished Chagas cardiomyopathy stages with an area under the curve of 0.87 (95% CI 0.777-0.977) and mean classification accuracy of 0.84.
