Key result
Pycnogenol improves flow-mediated dilatation by ~2.8 points vs placebo in CAD.
Why the study?
The effects of Pycnogenol on endothelial dysfunction, a precursor of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular events, remain elusive in patients with coronary artery disease.
RCT (n=23)
Double-blind
Cross-over
Mean Difference: 2.75 (95% CI 1.75–3.75)

Enseleit et al. (2012) conducted an RCT in Stable coronary artery disease (n=23). Pycnogenol vs. Placebo was evaluated on Endothelial function assessed by flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) of the brachial artery (MD 2.75, 95% CI 1.75-3.75, p=<0.0001). Pycnogenol at 200 mg/day significantly improved flow-mediated dilatation compared to placebo in patients with coronary artery disease (mean difference 2.75; 95% CI 1.75-3.75; P<0.0001).
