While laser-heating in the diamond anvil cell is now routine at most high pressure synchrotron beamlines, such systems are often perceived as being too elaborate and costly to set up in standard diamond cell laboratories. In view of the great potential of this technique, it would be desirable for it to be used more widely in such laboratories, to become a standard optical technique just as for example Raman spectroscopy. The present paper is not intended to be a review of existing systems, but rather a guide to making choices for setting up such a system. I describe options that have evolved over many years, with the minimal amount of optical components and the essential tools to measure temperatures accurately.
