Nano-silica is an effective nanometric additive for modifying the hydration behavior, reaction kinetics, and microstructure of Portland-cement-based materials. Its influence is not limited to a conventional pozzolanic reaction. Nano-silica also affects clinker dissolution, calcium–silicate–hydrate nucleation, calcium hydroxide consumption, ionic transport,pore-solution chemistry, and the development of the capillary-pore system. This study develops a theoretical framework for describing the effect of nano-silica oncement hydration kinetics. The proposed framework combines chemical thermodynamics, heterogeneous nucleation theory, reaction–diffusion equations, interfacial-energy concepts, and calorimetric analysis. Nano-silica is considered to operate through three coupled mechanisms: heterogeneous nucleation of calcium–silicate–hydrate, rapid pozzolanic consumption of calcium hydroxide, and physical refinement of the pore structure. The effective hydration rate is represented as the combined contribution of cement dissolution, calcium–silicate–hydrate nucleation and growth, and the pozzolanic reaction of amorphous silica. The analysis indicates that well-dispersed nano-silica shortens the induction period, increases the early heat-release rate, accelerates calcium–silicate–hydrate precipitation, consumes calcium hydroxide, and refines the capillary-pore structure. However, excessive nano-silica may cause agglomeration, increase water demand, reduce workability, and introduce diffusion limitations. The beneficial effect of nano-silica is therefore controlled by the balance between reactive surface area, dispersion stability, water availability, and the evolving permeability of the cement paste.
