Thallium-201 redistribution reflects both delayed ischemic accumulation and rapid normal myocardial washout.
Why the study?
The mechanism and time course of thallium-201 redistribution after transient myocardial ischemia were not fully understood.
Answers are grounded in this paper and cite their sources.
Tl-201 redistribution stems from delayed ischemic uptake plus normal-zone washout; leaves open optimal human imaging timing.

Beller et al. (1980) studied Transient myocardial ischemia (n=27). Thallium-201 administration during transient coronary occlusion and reperfusion vs. Normal myocardial regions was evaluated on Thallium-201 (201Tl) activity (counts/10 min/mg) (p=<0.001). Thallium-201 redistribution after transient myocardial ischemia in dogs is driven by both delayed accumulation in ischemic segments (P<0.001) and rapid washout from normal myocardial segments.
