Wang, Lawrence K. 王抗曝 (2026), "Double Tenth Day Returns: Recollections of My Military Service in the Huanglong Division"《又逢雙十節:回憶黃龍師服兵役的年華》 , Global Humanities and Liberal Arts, Lenox Institute Press, MA, USA. 2026(10E); 51 pages. ABSTRACT: This essay forms part of the author's life writing. Written in New York on Double Tenth National Day in 2026, it recalls his service as a reserve second lieutenant in Taiwan's Huanglong (Yellow Dragon) Division following his graduation in civil engineering from National Cheng Kung University in 1962. A red ceremonial archway designed for the division headquarters' National Day celebration—his first engineering design—provides the central image linking youthful aspirations, military responsibilities, and life choices. The narrative recounts duties in broadcasting, photography, meeting documentation, and English interpretation, alongside military training and everyday life. It also reflects on the grief and fear experienced while documenting a sudden death and a military execution. Friendships with fellow junior officers that endured through decades of correspondence, his father's successive encouragement to serve in the military and pursue graduate study abroad, and late-night English study illuminate his transition from military service to further education and engineering research. Presented as a literary memoir, the essay distinguishes firsthand experience and personal impressions from unverified military hearsay; it does not seek to establish a documented military history. Sixty-four years later, the red archway remains an enduring image of youth, connecting comradeship, family affection, and reflections on life's fragility. This article includes two original poems: Huanglong Years and The Shadow of the Second Lieutenant.
