This study assesses the impact of generative artificial intelligence (AI) on sustainable urban design, exploring its potential benefits and limitations. A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis. A comprehensive literature review was conducted to identify the current state of research on generative AI in urban design, and a questionnaire survey of 100 urban design professionals and stakeholders was administered to gather quantitative data. The survey revealed that 85% of respondents believed generative AI has the potential to promote sustainability in urban design. The top benefits identified included improved design efficiency (75%), enhanced design creativity (65%), and reduced environmental impact (55%). However, limitations such as lack of transparency (60%), bias in AI outputs (50%), and limited contextual understanding (40%) were also noted. The study's findings suggest that generative AI can be a valuable tool for promoting sustainable urban design, but its development and implementation must be carefully managed to address the identified challenges. To realize the benefits of generative AI, it is essential to develop transparent and explainable AI models, address bias in AI outputs, and improve contextual understanding. The study's conclusions have implications for urban planning and design practices, highlighting the need for a multidisciplinary approach to AI development and implementation. The findings of this study can inform policymakers, urban planners, and stakeholders seeking to harness the potential of generative AI in promoting sustainable urban design.
