Electric vehicles (EVs) are innovative products with unique advantages and limitations that influence consumer purchase behaviour. This research reviews 116 articles on consumer purchase behaviour towards EVs published from 2011 to 2024 worldwide, sourced from the Scopus database. Unlike prior EV reviews, which primarily rely on descriptive syntheses, this study integrates bibliometric analysis, a systematic literature review, a meta-analysis and a meta-regression to provide a comprehensive quantitative assessment. The study-led domain reviews included a PRISMA flow diagram protocol to minimize questionable research practices. The bibliometric analysis identifies global research trends and the prominence of keywords across countries through performance analysis and science mapping. The VOSviewer tool helps visualize relationships among articles through co-citation, bibliographic coupling and co-occurrence analysis. The past 14 years of theoretical development identified in the selected articles showed that the theory of planned behaviour was primarily used and subsequently extended with various additional constructs. A random-effects model confirmed a significant positive association between environmental concern and purchase intention, with study year acting as a significant moderator. The findings and conclusions offer insights into how these factors influence consumer purchasing behaviour and help manufacturers, marketers and the government develop targeted policies to promote EVs.
