ImpactAlign SDG is a proposed conceptual framework designed to help organizations understand, plan, assess, and communicate how their projects, programmes, policies, and initiatives contribute to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Although many development activities aim to support sustainable development, their connections with specific SDG goals, targets, and indicators are not always clearly defined or supported by measurable evidence. ImpactAlign SDG seeks to address this challenge by providing a structured approach to identifying SDG alignment and assessing development-related results. The framework connects project objectives and activities with relevant SDG goals, targets, and indicators. It follows a logical results pathway from inputs and activities to outputs, outcomes, and longer-term impacts. Through this approach, organizations can examine what they plan to achieve, what results they actually produce, and how those results relate to wider sustainable development priorities. The framework also encourages the use of reliable data, clear performance measures, stakeholder participation, and appropriate monitoring and evaluation methods. A key feature of ImpactAlign SDG is its focus on the quality and credibility of SDG alignment. Rather than assuming that a project contributes to an SDG simply because it addresses a related issue, the framework encourages organizations to explain the connection using clear objectives, relevant indicators, and supporting evidence. It also considers potential trade-offs between development priorities, cross-cutting sustainability issues, and the possibility that a project may contribute to several SDGs at the same time. Importantly, it distinguishes between activities that are aligned with an SDG, results that demonstrate progress, and impacts that can be reasonably linked to an intervention. ImpactAlign SDG is intended for use by government institutions, development agencies, non-governmental organizations, businesses, universities, researchers, and civil society organizations. It may support project design, strategic planning, resource allocation, monitoring, evaluation, institutional learning, and sustainability reporting. By providing a common structure for connecting development activities with the SDGs, the framework aims to improve transparency, strengthen evidence-based decision-making, and help organizations identify opportunities to increase their contribution to sustainable development. As a conceptual framework, ImpactAlign SDG is proposed for further development, practical testing, and validation across different sectors and organizational settings. It is not intended to replace the official SDG indicators, national monitoring systems, or established impact assessment methods. Instead, it offers a complementary approach that can help users organize existing tools and evidence within a consistent SDG alignment and impact assessment process. Its long-term purpose is to support more systematic, measurable, and accountable development practices that connect local and institutional actions with the broader objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
