Proteomic analysis identifies plasma protein mediators of the DASH diet's blood pressure benefits.
Why the study?
The causal mechanisms by which the DASH diet reduces systolic blood pressure and its impact on long-term cardiovascular outcomes remain unclear.

Proteomic and genetic analyses uncover causal protein biomarkers linking the DASH diet to reduced blood pressure, indicating mechanisms protecting against heart disease and diabetes.
Objectives: The Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet reduced systolic blood pressure (SBP) in two randomized, controlled, feeding studies. However, causal mechanisms by which the DASH diet reduces SBP are unclear, and challenges remain in determining whether short-term dietary interventions prevent long-term cardiovascular outcomes, such as coronary artery disease (CAD) or type 2 diabetes (T2D). We leverage plasma proteomics and human genetic analyses to identify potential causal protein biomarkers and estimate their effects on SBP and incident CAD and T2D.

Kim et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Hypertension. Plasma protein biomarkers was evaluated on Systolic blood pressure, incident coronary artery disease, and type 2 diabetes. The study leveraged plasma proteomics and genetic analyses to identify protein biomarkers mediating the DASH diet's effect on blood pressure, though specific quantitative results were not reported.
