Emergent pericardiocentesis and targeted antimicrobials resolve rare melioidosis suppurative pericarditis with tamponade.
Why the study?
Cardiac involvement, particularly cardiac tamponade, is a rare manifestation of melioidosis with few reported cases in the literature.
Case Report (n=1)
Melioidosis can rarely manifest as suppurative pericarditis and cardiac tamponade, requiring early recognition, prompt pericardiocentesis, and appropriate long-term antimicrobial therapy for successful resolution.
Consider melioidosis in tamponade among diabetics in endemic areas; extends four prior cases but leaves optimal regimens open.
, a bacterium endemic to tropical regions, including Taiwan. The disease can involve multiple organs; however, cardiac involvement, particularly cardiac tamponade, is rare. To date, only four cases of melioidosis presenting with cardiac tamponade have been reported in the literature. Here, we report an extremely rare case of melioidosis complicated by pericardial effusion and cardiac tamponade, which was successfully treated with pericardiocentesis and appropriate antimicrobial therapy.

Pan et al. (2026) conducted a case report in Melioidosis complicated by suppurative pericarditis and cardiac tamponade (n=1). Pericardiocentesis and antimicrobial therapy was evaluated on Clinical recovery. An extremely rare case of melioidosis complicated by suppurative pericarditis and cardiac tamponade was successfully managed with emergent pericardiocentesis and targeted antimicrobial therapy, leading to complete recovery.
