Key result
Higher emotional intelligence in children is linked to sympathetic activation and vagal withdrawal during cognitive tasks.
Why the study?
The relationship between autonomic nervous system activity and levels of emotional intelligence during cognitive activity in children aged 7–8 years was investigated.
Does cognitive load alter heart rate variability differently in children aged 7-8 years with high versus low emotional intelligence?
Observational
Does cognitive load alter heart rate variability differently in children aged 7-8 years with high versus low emotional intelligence?
In children aged 7-8 years, a higher level of emotional intelligence is associated with more dynamic and optimal autonomic nervous system regulation during cognitive tasks.
Autonomic patterns by emotional intelligence level warrant no clinical action in children; hypothesis-generating and extends prior autonomic associations.
The article presents the results of a study of vegetative support of cognitive activity (emotional identification) in children aged 7–8 years, depending on the level of emotional intelligence. The results of a study of the emotional intelligence of children aged 7–8 years using the method of T.D. Marcinkovskaya showed that 50% of children have a high and average level of emotional intelligence, most of whom are girls. Analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) in children aged 7–8 years with different levels of emotional intelligence revealed that higher values of parasympathetic activity were observed in children with high levels of emotional intelligence (group 1), which indicates a more optimal state of the autonomic nervous system compared with children with low emotional intelligence (group 2). It was found that in children of group 1, when performing a cognitive task, there is a decrease in parasympathetic and an increase in sympathetic activity, and in children from group 2, there are no significant changes in the spectral and temporal parameters of HRV. Sympathetic activation in combination with vagal inhibition during cognitive load in group 1 children may indicate the use of self-regulation resources. Our data confirm the relationship between the activity of the autonomic nervous system and the level of emotional intelligence.

Adamovskaya et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Different levels of emotional intelligence. High emotional intelligence vs. Low emotional intelligence was evaluated on Changes in spectral and temporal parameters of heart rate variability (HRV) during a cognitive task. High emotional intelligence in 7-8 year olds was associated with sympathetic activation and vagal inhibition during cognitive load, unlike children with low emotional intelligence.
