Protocol outlines Cochrane review evaluating laboratory monitoring strategies during lipid-lowering therapy.
Why the study?
The effects of different laboratory monitoring strategies for efficacy and safety in adults receiving pharmacological lipid-lowering therapy for cardiovascular prevention are unclear.
Do different laboratory monitoring strategies improve clinical outcomes and safety in adults receiving pharmacological lipid-lowering therapy?
Systematic Review
Do different laboratory monitoring strategies improve clinical outcomes and safety in adults receiving pharmacological lipid-lowering therapy?
This protocol defines a systematic methodology to evaluate the effects of different laboratory monitoring strategies in patients prescribed lipid-lowering therapies.
Protocol reports no results; leaves optimal lab monitoring strategies for lipid-lowering therapy open pending planned Cochrane review.
OBJECTIVES: This is a protocol for a Cochrane review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To assess the effects of different laboratory monitoring strategies for treatment efficacy (lipid levels) and treatment safety (hepatic, muscular, and renal parameters) in adults eligible for or receiving pharmacological lipid-lowering therapy for primary and/or secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease, including whether such monitoring is performed and the frequency or timing with which it is repeated.

Shokraee et al. (2026) conducted a systematic review in Cardiovascular disease prevention. Laboratory monitoring strategies vs. Alternative monitoring strategy or no routine testing was evaluated. This paper describes a protocol for a Cochrane systematic review assessing laboratory monitoring strategies in adults receiving lipid-lowering therapy, and therefore contains no clinical results.
