Why the study?
Stroke is a leading global cause of death and disability, and knowledge and attitudes toward stroke in Ikorodu, Lagos, Nigeria, were not well characterized.
Does fixed-bearing medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty improve patient-reported outcome measures at 5 years in patients with medial tibiofemoral arthritis?
Cohort (n=229)
No
Does fixed-bearing medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty improve patient-reported outcome measures at 5 years in patients with medial tibiofemoral arthritis?
Effect estimate: MD 19.4 (95% CI 18.3-20.5)
Absolute Event Rate: 44.3% vs 24.9%
Fixed-bearing medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty demonstrates excellent and sustained improvement in patient-reported outcomes and satisfaction at 5 years, extending indications regardless of age, BMI, patellofemoral arthritis, or functional ACL status.
High stroke knowledge in this cohort supports targeted education; leaves open generalizability and outcome impact in broader populations.
Background: Stroke is a leading global health concern, ranking as the second-leading cause of death and the third-leading cause of death and disability combined, as measured by disability-adjusted life years. This study assessed the knowledge and attitudes toward stroke among residents of Ikorodu Local Government Area, Lagos, Nigeria. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted using a pretested, structured, interviewer-administered questionnaire. A multistage sampling technique selected 208 respondents. Knowledge was scored and graded as poor (<50%) and good (≥50%), while attitude was scored and graded as poor (<70%) and good (≥70%). Mean knowledge and attitude scores were also determined. Fisher’s exact test and Student’s t -test were used for bivariate analyses, with P ≤ 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: Respondents had a mean age of 33.0 ± 11.6; most were 18–39 years (52.9%), female (55.3%), Christian (86.0%), never married (50.0%), and employed (85.1%). Overall, 89.0% had good knowledge and 95.0% had good attitudes. Tertiary education was significantly associated with good knowledge ( P = 0.012) and attitudes ( P = 0.004). Conclusion: Regular community health education is needed to improve stroke awareness and promote preventive behaviors. Routine screening for hypertension and diabetes should be strengthened, along with enhanced training for primary healthcare workers.

Olayinka et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in Medial compartment tibiofemoral arthritis (n=229). Fixed-bearing medial unicompartmental knee arthroplasty (UKA) vs. Preoperative baseline was evaluated on Oxford Knee Score (OKS) at 5 years (MD 19.4, 95% CI 18.3-20.5).
