Why the study?
Long-term adherence to lipid-lowering therapy for secondary ASCVD prevention is challenging, and real-world evidence on bempedoic acid adherence, LDL-C outcomes, and clinician strategies is limited.
Does bempedoic acid improve LDL-C reduction and adherence in secondary ASCVD prevention patients in a rural primary care setting?
Observational
No
Does bempedoic acid improve LDL-C reduction and adherence in secondary ASCVD prevention patients in a rural primary care setting?
Supports bempedoic acid for statin-intolerant patients missing LDL-C targets; extends real-world evidence for non-statin options in secondary ASCVD prevention.
Background and Aims: Achieving guideline-directed LDL-C targets is central to effective secondary ASCVD prevention, yet long-term adherence to lipid-lowering therapy remains a challenge. Bempedoic acid offers a non-statin alternative for patients who do not achieve sufficient LDL-C reduction with conventional treatments. Real-world evidence on adherence, LDL-C outcomes, and the strategies healthcare professionals (HCPs) use to support persistence is limited. Aim: To assess long-term LDL-C reduction, adherence, and target attainment among secondary prevention patients treated with bempedoic acid, and to examine primary care HCPs’ perspectives on approaches that support persistence and optimise patient engagement.

Donaldson et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Secondary ASCVD. Bempedoic acid was evaluated on Long-term LDL-C reduction, adherence, and target attainment. Bempedoic acid for secondary ASCVD prevention was the focus of this study, but the abstract only outlines the aims and reports no quantitative results.
