This commentary aims to discuss the article by Liu et al., “Association between dietary patterns and bone health among children and adolescents: a cross-sectional study.” This study describes the association between dietary patterns and bone health in Chinese children and adolescents. This study identified healthy dietary patterns associated with calcaneal bone quality and emphasized the importance of dietary pattern analysis in nutritional epidemiology. The study’s results are promising, but there are several critical methodological issues that need to be considered when interpreting its results. These issues include the study’s sampling strategy, the method used to identify dietary patterns, the study’s interpretation of the clinical relevance of the results, and the analysis of the relationship between dietary patterns and nonlinear associations. This commentary discusses these issues and provides recommendations for future studies. By focusing on these critical issues, this article seeks to contribute to the discussion of the role of dietary patterns in skeletal health and help future studies avoid similar methodological pitfalls.
