This is an English translation of a Latin essay published in 1893 by the editor of Josephus’ works. In this study Benedikt Niese sets out, on the basis of his thorough familiarity with Josephus’ diction and style, his reasons for denying the authenticity of Josephus’ account of Jesus and the first Christians ( Antiquities 18.63–64 – the Testimonium Flavianum [ TF ]). The translator has added some clarifications and comments, as well as an appendix demonstrating Niese’s assessment of Josephus’ use of παρ’ ἡμῖν.
