Designing, conducting and reviewing studies with applied statistics involves decisions. The life cycle view perspective of statistics combines soft skills in problem elicitation and communication of findings with technical skills in statistical analysis. The paper shows how the data analysis processes can be supported by checklists of questions covering various aspects of the statistical analysis presented in any applied research. A related issue, supported by checklists, is the ability to formulate insightful questions. Innovation and creativity in posing questions is partly affected by the analyst’s personal ability and by skills that can be acquired and improved. The paper provides checklists, with questions to be used in a wide angle perspective of statistical analysis. The intended audience consists of researchers using data analysis methods, statisticians, scientists, and instructors looking for structured pedagogical aids to support their teaching. The checklists provided in the paper have also proved useful for self assessment of students conducting data driven projects in their classes. The examples provided here are all based on real life experience. Readers are encouraged to tailor the checklists to their specific needs and level of application.
