We present a genome assembly of the tetraploid Salix cinerea (2 n = 4 x = 76; grey willow; Streptophyta; Magnoliopsida; Malpighiales; Salicaceae). The submitted sequence comprises two assemblies designated haplotype 1 and haplotype 2, with total lengths of 386.72 megabases and 1,004.23 megabases, respectively. Haplotype 1 represents a single monoploid chromosome complement; 87.7% was scaffolded into 19 chromosomal pseudomolecules, including the Z sex chromosome. Haplotype 2 was assembled to scaffold level. The mitochondrial genome assembly has a length of 686.79 kilobases and the plastid genome assembly has a length of 155.63 kilobases. Gene annotation of the haplotype 1 assembly by Ensembl identified 34,898 protein-coding genes. This assembly was generated as part of the Darwin Tree of Life project, which produces reference genomes for eukaryotic species found in Britain and Ireland.
