Academic libraries are undergoing a fundamental transformation as a result of the rapid growth of digital information, electronic scholarly resources, open-access publishing, research data, bibliometric tools, artificial intelligence, and networked information systems. The traditional concept of the library as a place for collecting, organizing, preserving, and providing access to documents is gradually being replaced by the concept of the library as an active research environment. In this changing environment, librarians are expected to participate throughout the research lifecycle and provide services that support information discovery, literature review, research data management, scholarly communication, research visibility, bibliometric analysis, research ethics, and digital scholarship. The present paper discusses the changing role of librarians in transforming academic libraries into research hubs. It examines the importance of research-support services, information and digital literacy, literature-search assistance, digital repositories, research data management, citation and bibliometric services, reference management, open access, scholarly publishing, research integrity, researcher visibility, artificial intelligence, and collaborative research environments. The paper also discusses the challenges faced by Indian academic libraries in implementing advanced research-support services and suggests a strategic framework for developing libraries as institutional research hubs. The study concludes that the future relevance of academic libraries will increasingly depend on the ability of librarians to move from a reactive service model to a proactive research-partnership model.
