Preoperative headphone music fails to reduce anxiety or stress before coronary transluminal angioplasty.
Why the study?
The effect of music on managing anxiety and stress in patients awaiting coronary transluminal angioplasty was evaluated due to uncertainty about its benefits in this setting.

Does music administration before coronary transluminal angioplasty reduce anxiety and stress compared to headphones without music?
Listening to music before coronary angioplasty did not significantly reduce anxiety and stress compared to wearing headphones without music, though the headphones themselves may have provided a noise-muffling benefit.
May ease pre-angioplasty anxiety; leaves open routine adoption pending larger confirmatory trials.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of music on the management of anxiety and stress in patients awaiting coronary transluminal angioplasty. METHOD: A double-blind, randomized controlled clinical trial was conducted according to the Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) guidelines. The study was carried out at the hemodynamics unit of the Onofre Lopes University Hospital from August to December 2024, with 52 participants equally divided into an intervention and a control group. Both groups were fitted with headphones before the procedure, but only patients in the intervention group were exposed to music. Data were collected using a sociodemographic and clinical data form, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and Lipp's Stress Symptoms Inventory for Adults. RESULTS: Although there were no significant reductions in the intergroup analysis, the intragroup analysis showed that music influenced a reduction in anxiety and heart rate in the intervention group. However, there was no evidence of an effect of music on stress. CONCLUSION: No significant reductions were identified in the levels of anxiety and stress of the participants in this research. It is also suggested that the use of headphones without music may have a relaxing effect by muffling external sounds, which possibly masked relevant statistical differences. Mendes et al. (2026) conducted an RCT in Patients awaiting coronary transluminal angioplasty (n=52). Music via headphones vs. Headphones without music was evaluated on Levels of anxiety and stress. Listening to music via headphones during the preoperative period of coronary transluminal angioplasty did not significantly reduce anxiety and stress compared to wearing headphones without music.
