Coaches often encounter difficulties during coaching sessions. These difficulties can vary from slight discomfort or distraction to much more challenging difficulties, such as emotional labour or even trauma. But how do coaches hold these difficult conversations, and what supports them during these challenging sessions? Using an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) approach, this article focuses on the lived experiences of coaches who draw on their mindfulness practice during challenging moments in coaching sessions. The findings from this study highlight the value of turning towards difficulty with attention, grounding, compassion, presence, and inquiry. The study also highlights how these coaches engage in regular mindfulness practice outside of the coaching session.
