Research on magnesium materials has achieved rapid development in 2025, with a total of 6124 related papers indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection, where China contributes 50.89% of the global output, occupying a leading position in international magnesium research. Bibliometric analysis indicates that microstructure evolution, mechanical performance, and corrosion resistance remain the mainstream research focuses of magnesium alloys. Meanwhile, functional magnesium material systems, including biomedical magnesium alloys, hydrogen storage media, and rechargeable magnesium batteries, have witnessed remarkable breakthroughs. Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) techniques are increasingly integrated into magnesium research workflows, supporting multi-performance forecasting, inverse alloy composition design and interpretable property regulation, which provides an innovative paradigm for the customized optimization of magnesium alloy properties. The continuous drop in primary magnesium prices further facilitates scaled industrial deployment of magnesium products. This review systematically summarizes the full spectrum of magnesium research advances in 2025 and highlights prevailing bottlenecks together with prospective research pathways for magnesium-based materials.
