It is well established that posttraumatic growth (PTG), or positive transformation catalyzed by trauma, is a realistic occurrence following interpersonal trauma. However, factors that support the therapeutic process to facilitate PTG are under-explored. Existing qualitative studies focus on trauma survivors, whereas this study sought to advance understanding of counselors’ perspectives on factors that promote PTG among interpersonal trauma survivors. Thematic analysis of semi-structured interviews with eight licensed professional counselors revealed nine themes: therapeutic relationship, meeting the client where they are, instilling hope, using specific modalities, validating parts of self, social support, readiness and motivation, safety and stability, and impact on the counselor. These findings highlight ways counselors can encourage growth and thriving in the interpersonal trauma recovery process.
