Snubber circuits are commonly used to suppress voltage stress on power switches. Compared with dissipative snubbers, lossless snubbers are generally more efficient because they can reduce power losses in the snubber circuit. Aiming to obtain high efficiency of the lossless snubber, the reverse recovery characteristics of snubber diodes should be considered. This paper examines the effects of the snubber diode’s reverse recovery characteristics in the lossless LC snubber. Results indicate that a long reverse-recovery time leads to poor snubber efficiency. Additionally, key design considerations for the lossless LC snubber are discussed. The validity of the proposed analysis and design approach is confirmed experimentally using a prototype of a 35 W (12 V/2 A, 5 V/2.2 A) flyback converter.
