The article analyses the unity of the musical instrument (dombra, dutar, qobiz; Karakalpak “duwtar” and “qobız”) and the word in the performance of Uzbek and Karakalpak dastans. It considers the syncretic nature of dastan performance, the link between the type of performer and the instrument, the role of the instrument in transmitting tradition, the address to the instrument in the order of performance (“dombra tontarmoq”) and the image of the bakhshi-hero in the dastans of the “ashiq” cycle. The study is based on published educational and scholarly sources; its conclusions are presented as hypotheses that require separate verification against field recordings.
