WordCraft is a free, open-source word processor developed by ArtCraft for users who need a capable, private, and flexible writing tool. It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, FreeBSD, and modern web browsers, so users can work online or install a desktop version for offline writing. Designed with a familiar ribbon interface, WordCraft includes essential tools for text formatting, styles, tables, document navigation, review, references, layout, themes, watermarks, footnotes, citations, captions, and indexes. It opens and saves DOCX files, making it suitable for exchanging documents with Microsoft Word, and works with DOC, ODT, RTF, HTML, Markdown, TeX, and TXT formats, exporting to selectable-text PDFs. Privacy is central to WordCraft. The editor works locally, requires no account or subscription, and keeps spelling, grammar, and document processing offline. Open-source MIT and Apache-2.0 licensing lets users inspect and audit the code. WordCraft is built for automation and AI-assisted workflows: the ribbon, command line, JSON control channel, and MCP server enable extensive scripting. Still in alpha, with no real-time co-authoring yet, it is a promising, cost-free alternative for personal, academic, and professional writing.
