Summary. Based on extensive fieldwork associated with the examination of specimens deposited in over 80 herbaria in Brazil and elsewhere, this revision is the result of over 50 years’ study by the senior author of Neotropical Lamiaceae. Following an introduction, giving a historical account of the development of Hyptidinae classification, there is a description of the genus Hyptis , a conspectus of infrageneric categories, with keys to sections, individual subsections and species. There are full descriptions of all species of Hyptis recorded from Brazil, and also included are details of species distributions by state, indicating endemics, and listing countries outside Brazil, where these occur. Line drawings illustrating species for each infrageneric taxon and photo plates are included. There are additional notes, where further discussion is considered necessary, and commentary on geographical distribution of taxa. An index of taxa is provided, and an extensive list of exsiccatae.
