The transition toward renewable energy has become a strategic priority for countries seeking to strengthen energy security, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and promote sustainable economic development. In Uzbekistan, wind energy represents an increasingly important component of this transition because of the country’s growing electricity demand and the need to diversify its energy mix. This article examines the role of wind power in sustainable development, using the Zarafshan Wind Farm in the Navoi region as a case study. The research employs qualitative document analysis and comparative assessment of project documentation, official government information, international energy reports, and relevant environmental and social frameworks. The analysis focuses on four dimensions: energy-system diversification, potential greenhouse gas emission reductions, regional socioeconomic development, and environmental management. The Zarafshan project, developed by Masdar, has an installed capacity of 500 megawatts and comprises 111 wind turbine generators, each with a capacity of approximately 4.7 megawatts. Available project information indicates that the wind farm is expected to contribute substantially to electricity generation and emissions avoidance. Nevertheless, the magnitude of its actual environmental benefits depends on operational performance, the electricity generation displaced, and the management of ecological impacts. The study also identifies challenges related to grid integration, generation variability, biodiversity protection, and the need for transparent monitoring. It concludes that wind energy can support Uzbekistan’s sustainable development objectives when infrastructure investment is accompanied by effective environmental safeguards, reliable performance data, and regional capacity-building measures.
