Why the study?
The study aimed to evaluate the clinical efficacy of oral traditional Chinese medicine containing danshen and rhubarb components combined with conventional Western drugs in treating chronic heart failure.
Does oral traditional Chinese medicine containing danshen and rhubarb combined with conventional Western medicine improve cardiac function and 6-minute walk test distance in patients with chronic heart failure?
Cohort (n=47,007)
Yes
Does oral traditional Chinese medicine containing danshen and rhubarb combined with conventional Western medicine improve cardiac function and 6-minute walk test distance in patients with chronic heart failure?
Hazard Ratio: 3.6
Absolute Event Rate: 34.4% vs 35.1%
Adding oral traditional Chinese medicine containing danshen and rhubarb to conventional Western therapy improves cardiac function, 6-minute walk distance, and intestinal flora regulation in patients with chronic heart failure.
Supports adjunctive danshen-rhubarb TCM in chronic HF; extends RCT meta-analysis evidence to function and exercise capacity.
Background: The combination of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and routine therapy can improve the clinical efficacy of treating chronic heart failure, reduce side effects, and improve cardiac function. Aim: To evaluate the clinical efficacy of oral Chinese medicine containing danshen and rhubarb components in combination with conventional western drugs in the treatment of chronic heart failure. Methods: This meta-analysis was registered with registration number: INPLASY202610010. PubMed, Embase, The Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), China Journal Full Text Database (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and Wipu Database were searched by computer, while domestic and international orthopedic journals were searched manually. Clinical randomized controlled trials related to oral TCM containing danshen and rhubarb in combination with conventional Western medicines for the treatment of chronic heart failure that have been published in the public domain up to July 2024 were collected. The quality of the included literature was evaluated with reference to the evaluation criteria in the Newcastle–Ottawa Scale (NOS). Meta-analysis of the extracted data was performed using Review manager 5.4 software. Results: A total of 18 clinical randomized controlled trial studies were included, with a total of 1,455 patients with chronic heart failure, including 731 in the trial group and 724 in the control group. The combination of oral Chinese medicine and conventional treatment had a better effective rate of cardiac function improvement than conventional Western medicine treatment alone. There was better improvement in terms of 6-minute walk test distance. Conclusion: Oral preparations containing danshen and rhubarb components of TCM combined with conventional methods for the treatment of chronic heart failure can regulate the intestinal flora of patients.

Li et al. (2026) conducted a cohort in Left ventricular hypertrophy and long-term cardiovascular risk (n=47,007). Deep learning-enabled 12-lead ECG model for LVH detection (AI-ECG-LVH) vs. Echocardiography-defined LVH (ECHO-LVH) and conventional rule-based Philips ECG interpretation was evaluated on Detection of echocardiography-confirmed LVH and prognostic risk stratification for incident acute myocardial infarction (AMI), heart failure (HF), and atrial fibrillation (AFib) (HR 3.60 for incident HF (severe AI-ECG-LVH); AUC 0.75-0.82 for LVH detection).
