An optimal set of selectors for single-frequency generation in continuously widely tuneable ring lasers was experimentally identified. This set consists of two elements: a three-component birefringent filter with plate thickness ratios of 1:4:13 to minimise side band transmission peaks, and a solid quartz Fabry–Pérot étalon with a thickness of a few millimetres. Using a commercial compact high-speed galvanometer driver to tilt the latter also enables automatic locking of the étalon’s transmission peak to the cavity mode and allows continuous (mode-hop free) frequency tuning in the GHz range.
