SUMMARY Surgical removal of the lacrimal gland from 1 eye of each of 6 dogs resulted in reduced (5 to 23%) Schirmer tear test values when compared with the values for the eyes prior to removal. Removal of the gland of the membrana nictitans from 1 eye of each of 4 dogs resulted in 29 to 57% reduction of Schirmer tear test values, when similarly compared. Removal of both glands from 1 eye of each of 17 dogs resulted in Schirmer tear test values of 0 mm/minute and signs of keratoconjunctivitis sicca (kcs) in each eye.
