Purpose This study aims to examine the role of trust and the innovation ecosystem dimensions (network collaboration, interdependence, value co-creation and innovation orientation) in innovation performance. Design/methodology/approach The research proposes a conceptual model and a set of hypotheses. The model was empirically tested using partial least squares structural equation modeling with data collected from 121 respondents across four innovation ecosystems in southern Brazil. Findings Trust positively influences network collaboration, interdependence, value co-creation and innovation orientation. Similarly, network collaboration, interdependence and innovation orientation positively impact innovation performance. However, no evidence was found supporting a positive influence of value co-creation on innovation performance. In addition, the direct relationship between trust and actors’ innovation performance was not supported. Thus, trust is not a direct driver for innovation. Originality/value This study offers a comprehensive understanding of the role of trust in sustaining innovation ecosystems. It highlights how trust ultimately influences actors’ innovation performance, an area that remains underexplored, particularly in empirical research.
