This article examines the documentary heritage of the Christ the Redeemer Monument, relating the discussion of the three structuring functions of archival science — management, preservation, and access — to an empirical case marked by a complex historical formation, dispersed custody, and a growing demand for public mediation. Drawing on a mapping of the documentary layers accumulated over more than one hundred and thirty years, from the antecedents of the 1888 imperial project to the contemporary heritage-mediation initiative in digital format of the Olhar do Redentor project, in 2025, the article argues that the treatment of complex contemporary heritage requires an approach that acknowledges the effective interdependence among these functions rather than their sequential application. It proposes the notion of a documentary layer embedded in the constructed work, prompted by the case of the handwritten records integrated into the soapstone cladding of the monument.
