This article analyzes the iconographic collection of the newspaper Correio da Manhã, currently held by the Brazilian National Archives, highlighting aspects related to its organization, preservation, access and interpretative possibilities. Based on the editorial transformations that occurred between 1969 and 1974, as well as the subsequent institutional safeguarding process culminating in the incorporation of the fonds into the National Archives in 1982, the study discusses the political, economic and documentary impacts resulting from censorship and the pressures imposed by the Brazilian military regime on the newspaper. Grounded in the parameters established by ISAD(G) and in the principles of multilevel archival description, the archival treatment of the collection enabled the contextualization, retrieval and mediation of information while preserving the organic relationships inherent to the constitution of the fonds. The analysis of the iconographic dossiers reveals records related to Rio de Janeiro’s Carnival, popular manifestations and the social dynamics of the city throughout the twentieth century, emphasizing the value of photographic documents as supports of memory, documentary heritage and social representation. The study concludes that the archival organization of the collection strengthens not only its physical and intellectual preservation, but also its possibilities for cultural dissemination, critical interpretation and socially broadened access.
