This study was motivated by the low beginning reading skills of first-grade students at MIN 16 Aceh Tengah, particularly in recognizing letters, combining letters into syllables, reading siple word, and pronouncing words correctly. This study aimed to improve students’ beginning reading skills through the use of audiovisual media in Indonesian language learning. This study employed Classroom Action Research (CAR), conducted in two cycles consisting of planning, action implementation, observation, and reflection. The research subjects were 16 first-grade students at MIN 16 Aceh Tengah. Data were collected through observation, beginning reading skill tests, and documentation. Audiovisual media was expected to enhance students’ attention, interest, and participation in learning while helping them understand reading materials more effectively. The results showed that the use of audiovisual media improved students’ beginning reading skills. In Cycle I, students achieved a score of 56.87%, categorized as fair, while in Cycle II, the score increased to 82.5%, categorized as excellent. Furthermore, students demonstrated greater learning interest and active participation throughout the learning process. Therefore, the use of audiovisual media was effective in improving the beginning reading skills of first-grade students at MIN 16 Aceh Tengah.
