Background Anticipatory grief is a common emotional response among family caregivers of individuals with a life-limiting illness. Unaddressed, it can lead to psychological distress and an impact on health and quality of life. Aims: This literature review explores management strategies recommended for family caregivers who are experiencing anticipatory grief. Methods A systematic search of the literature was undertaken using CINAHL, Cochrane, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PubMed, Scopus and Web of Science. Results Three overarching themes emerged from the analysis: individual formal psychological therapy; social, community and health care support; and family therapy. Conclusions A range of management approaches for anticipatory grief were identified, encompassing more structured therapeutic interventions, including psychological interviews, counselling, cognitive behavioural therapy and narrative therapy. Themes relating to social support were also identified, including opportunities to talk with others and having time away from the caregiver role.
