Key result
Drug-related problems are significantly associated with longer hospital length of stay in congestive heart failure.
Why the study?
Medication management in CHF is often complex and involves polypharmacy that can lead to Drug Related Problems (DRPs), which may worsen symptoms and increase hospital Length of Stay (LOS). This study aimed to analyze the relationship between DRPs and LOS in patients with CHF.

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) is a condition in which the heart is unable to pump blood throughout the body. One critical aspect of CHF management is the use of medications, which is often complex and involves polypharmacy that can potentially lead to Drug Related Problems (DRPs). Length of Stay (LOS) refers to the duration of a patient’s hospital stay. DRPs can worsen CHF symptoms, which may lead to an increase in the LOS. This study aims to analyze the relationship between Drug Related Problems (DRPs) and Length of Stay (LOS) in patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF). This analytical observational study used a retrospective design based on medical records of patients with CHF at UNS Hospital from March 2024 to March 2026. DRPs were identified and classified using the Pharmaceutical Care Network Europe (PCNE) V9.1 classification. The relationship between Drug Related Problems (DRPs) and Length of Stay (LOS) was analyzed using the chi-square test. Among 70 patients, 228 DRP events were identified. The most frequently identified DRP category was unknown problem status, with 68 events (29,8%), followed by inappropriate drug combination, with 66 events (28,9%). The most common LOS was <4 days for 40 patients (57,1%), while 30 patients (42,9%) had a stay of ≥4 days. Bivariate analysis showed a statistically significant association between the number of DRPs and LOS (p=0.003). There was a significant association between the number of DRPs and LOS among patients with CHF at UNS Hospital.

Nurdilanda et al. (2026) conducted an observational in Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) (n=70). Drug Related Problems (DRPs) classified using PCNE V9.1 vs. Different numbers/levels of Drug Related Problems was evaluated on Length of Stay (LOS) (<4 days vs. ≥4 days) (p=0.003). The number of drug-related problems (228 events across 70 patients) was significantly associated with hospital length of stay in congestive heart failure patients (p=0.003).
