The article examines the relationship between usual and occasional lexical units in the language of modern mass media and internet communication. The relevance of the study is determined by the fact that the dynamics of modern vocabulary requires clearer criteria for classifying a new formation as occasional or usual. The article discusses criteria for distinguishing occasionalisms from neologisms, the notion of a potential word, and the main word-formation models of coinages in media texts (contamination, evaluative affixation, puns) and in online communication (adaptation of borrowings, graphic play, “local usage”). The nominative, expressive-evaluative, pragmatic, euphemistic and identification functions of occasionalisms are described. It is shown that the internet accelerates the transition of a word from occasional to usual status, making the boundary between these categories fluid. A three-stage scheme of lexicalization is proposed: occasional unit, potential word, usual word.
