This article proposes an approach to understanding the socioeconomic factors related to the participation in cultural activities of the Colombian population for 2017, specifying that cultural participation influences economic and social development. For this, a descriptive analysis of the inhabitants' spending on culture is presented and, subsequently, a grouping model is developed by K-modes to identify typologies of cultural consumption based on personal characteristics and modes of participation of certain groups of the population, defining six general groups of cultural participation. The findings indicate that the lack of money, time and interest in certain activities, together with other sociodemographic characteristics, are key to studying the phenomenon of cultural consumption in the country.
