AbstractFor indigenous people, land constitutes the core of spiritual, cultural, and ecological identity. The loss of land entails not only the disappearance of a living space but also the rupture of relationships with ancestors, God,and the ecosystem. This article examines the struggle of the Marafenfen community in the Aru Islands, Maluku, against the Indonesian Navy’s unilateral claim to 98 hectares of customary land. Employing a qualitativeapproach through interviews, documentation, and literature review, this study reveals that land dispossession is perceived as ecological grief, a form of cosmological wound. The loss of land impacts not only ecology but also spirituality, as it severs connections with Jomgasira (ancestors) and Jirjirduai (the Creator God). Nevertheless, such grief is transformed into resistance through customary practices such as sasi and Tordauk, which strengthen communal solidarity. Theological reflection emphasizes the church’s calling to accompany indigenous communities, foster ecological spirituality, and affirm land as sacred heritage to be preserved for the sustainability of the cosmos.
