The tradition of menangguk ikan is a traditional practice among local communities that involves the utilization of aquatic resources while embodying cultural knowledge and values transmitted across generations. This study aims to examine the tradition of menangguk ikan as a form of local wisdom among the community of Kemuning District, Indragiri Hilir Regency, Riau Province, by exploring its social, cultural, and local knowledge values as well as its role in cultural sustainability. This study employs a literature study method with a qualitative-descriptive approach. Data were obtained from relevant scholarly literature concerning local wisdom, traditional fishing practices, local ecological knowledge, and fisheries resource management, and were analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate that the tradition of menangguk ikan, particularly in the context of the Batu Ampar Village community, is an integral part of local life that reflects the use of traditional technology, skills, local knowledge, aquatic resource utilization, and social activities. The tradition embodies several local wisdom values, including local knowledge, intergenerational transmission, social values, cultural identity, ecological awareness, and economic values. Furthermore, menangguk ikan plays a role in maintaining cultural identity through knowledge transmission, strengthening social relationships, and preserving the community’s relationship with its local environment. Therefore, preserving this tradition should not be limited to maintaining its tools and practices but should also encompass the knowledge, skills, values, and cultural meanings embedded within it.
